Step 1
Pressure cook 1 cup of toor dal in 3 cups of water till it's mashed. I usually cook it for 4-5 whistles to get the desired consistency.
Step 2
Heat ghee in a vessel and add cumin seeds.
Step 3
Once cumin sputters, add green chili, chopped ginger and curry leaves.
Step 4
Once the raw smell of ginger goes, add chopped tomatoes and let it cook till the oil separates.
Step 5
Once the tomato is cooked, add turmeric and red chili powder and cook for a few mins. Then add the cooked dal along with some water to bring the mixture to desired consistency and bring to a boil.
Step 6
Once the dal starts boiling, lower the flame, and add tamarind and jaggery and stir well. At this point adjust the salt to taste.
Step 7
Let the dal boil for 2 more minutes and then switch off the flame and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
