Step 1
Soak tuvar in water for half an hour, then wash & boil it in cooker with 2 cups of water, drumsticks, tomatoes, turmeric & give 9 whistles & then switch off the gas & keep it aside till whole of the pressure from cooker is released normally.
Step 2
Keep small kadai on gas, put 2 tsp of oil in it & crackle fenugreek seeds, add onions cut longlish & saute till colour of onion changes, add coconut & saute to light brown, add asafoetida, add 2 sprigs of curry leaves & saute for a second, add sambar powder & saute for a minute , then switch off the gas & after it cools dry grind it in mixie , then add water & grind again into fine paste .
Step 3
Now remove the vessel of tuvar with tomato & drumstick from cooker & keep it on gas, add salt, ground masala paste & tamarind pulp into it & boil nicely. You can adjust the water quantity in sambar as per your liking. Switch off the gas. Sambar is ready. Crackle mustard in remaining oil & pour it over the sambar. Put remaining sprig of curry leaves into it. Close the sambar with a lid.
Step 4
Sambar is ready to be served with rice as main dish. You can also have it with Idli or dosa.
