Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons Butter
  • 1/2 cup Molasses
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1 2/3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 pound Pitted dates, chopped

Instructions

  1. 1In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the molasses and milk, stirring to combine. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. 2Add the chopped dates to the wet ingredients and stir. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Pour the batter into a well-buttered mold. Butter the cover of the mold as well. Place the mold in a steamer and steam for 2 1/2 hours, maintaining a steady boil.
