Mint Julep

A classic Southern cocktail featuring fresh mint, brandy, peach brandy, and crushed ice, served in a frosted tumbler.

Ingredients

  • 12 sprigs Fresh mint sprigs, young (Use tender young sprigs for best flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon White sugar (Superfine sugar dissolves more easily)
  • 2 ounces Peach brandy (Half a wineglass, approximately 2 oz)
  • 2 ounces Brandy, common (Half a wineglass, approximately 2 oz)
  • 1 cup Ice, crushed or pounded (Enough to fill the tumbler)

Instructions

  1. 1Place about a dozen young mint sprigs into a tumbler. Add the tablespoon of white sugar directly over the mint.
  2. 2Gently muddle or press the mint with the sugar to release the mint oils and begin dissolving the sugar. Do not over-muddle or the mint will become bitter.
  3. 3Pour in half a wineglassful (about 2 ounces) of peach brandy and the same amount of common brandy over the muddled mint and sugar.
  4. 4Fill the tumbler completely with pounded or crushed ice, packing it in firmly. The ice should dome slightly above the rim of the glass.
  5. 5Stir briefly to combine and frost the outside of the glass. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig if desired. Serve immediately while cold.
