FEDORA

FEDORA

This complex and potent pre-Prohibition cocktail combines the rich warmth of brandy and whiskey with the tropical funk of Jamaica rum and the sweet citrus notes of Curacao. The Fedora is a spirit-forward refresher served over shaved ice, creating a perfectly chilled sipping experience that evolves as the ice slowly melts. Garnished with fresh fruit, it offers a sophisticated balance of strong spirits and sweet aromatics ideal for a slow afternoon.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Shaved ice (Enough to fill a large bar glass 3/4 full.)
  • 2 teaspoons Bar sugar (superfine sugar) (Can substitute with 0.5 oz simple syrup.)
  • 1 tablespoon Water (Used to dissolve the sugar.)
  • 1 ounce Curacao (Originally '1 pony'. Converted to modern measurement (1 pony = 1 oz).)
  • 1 ounce Brandy (Originally '1 pony'. Converted to modern measurement (1 pony = 1 oz).)
  • 1/2 ounce Jamaica Rum (Originally '1/2 pony'. Converted to modern measurement (1 pony = 1 oz).)
  • 1/2 ounce Whiskey (Originally '1/2 pony'. Converted to modern measurement (1 pony = 1 oz).)
  • 1 handful Fresh fruit (For garnish (e.g., berries, orange slice, pineapple).)

Instructions

  1. 1Fill a large bar glass or tumbler approximately 3/4 full with shaved ice. In a cocktail shaker, dissolve the bar sugar in a little water (about 1 tablespoon) until no granules remain.
  2. 2Add the Curacao, Brandy, Jamaica Rum, and Whiskey to the shaker with the dissolved sugar. Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously until well-chilled.
  3. 3Strain the mixture into the prepared glass over the shaved ice. Dress generously with fresh fruit and serve immediately with straws.
