Baking-powder Biscuits (Fifteen biscuits)

These classic baking powder biscuits are a delightful treat, offering a comforting taste of history. With a flaky, tender texture and a simple preparation, they're perfect for breakfast, brunch, or alongside a hearty dinner. The buttery flavor pairs wonderfully with jam, honey, or gravy.

Ingredients

  • 2 C All-purpose flour
  • 4 t Baking powder
  • 1/2 t Salt
  • 3 T Butter (or vegetable shortening) (Originally lard. Substituted with butter for modern preference. Can also use vegetable shortening for similar texture.)
  • 2/3 C Milk

Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. 2Cut the butter (or shortening) into the dry ingredients using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. 3Slowly add the milk, mixing until just combined. The dough should be moist but not overly wet. Add a little more milk if needed, as the amount can vary depending on the flour.
  4. 4Pat the dough to a thickness of about 3/4 inch. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits. Place the biscuits side by side on a baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
