Olan

Olan is a traditional dish from Kerala, typically served during festival sadhyas for lunch and dinner. It features red cow peas and red pumpkin cooked in coconut cream, seasoned with green chillies and curry leaves.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Red Cow Peas (Soaked overnight)
  • 500 grams Red Pumpkin (Cut into medium pieces)
  • 2 units Green Chillies
  • 1 teaspoon Salt (Adjust to taste)
  • 0.5 cup Coconut Cream
  • 2 sprigs Curry Leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Coconut Oil

Instructions

  1. 1Soak the red cow peas overnight. Drain and add to a pressure cooker with salt. Cook for 4 whistles until tender.
  2. 2Add the green chillies and red pumpkin to the cooked cow peas. Cook until the pumpkin is tender.
  3. 3Stir in the coconut cream and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Turn off the heat immediately.
  4. 4Add the curry leaves and drizzle with coconut oil. Stir gently to combine.
  5. 5Serve the Olan hot as a side dish with rice.
