Sweet Rava Upuma

A sweet version of the popular South Indian breakfast dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Rava (Medium size rava not coarse)
  • 1.5 tbsp Sunflower oil
  • 1 unit/count Onions (Medium size)
  • 1 unit/count Green chillies
  • 0.75 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 2.75 cup Water
  • 2 tbsp Sugar (Optional)

Instructions

  1. 1Place a pan over medium heat and roast the rava until it turns a light brown color. Ensure not to over-roast.
  2. 2Add 1 tsp of oil to the roasted rava and fry for an additional minute. Transfer to a separate vessel.
  3. 3In the same pan, heat the remaining oil and add mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add onions and green chillies. Sauté until the onions become translucent.
  4. 4Add water to the pan and bring it to a boil. Stir in salt and curry leaves, allowing it to boil for another minute.
  5. 5Add the fried rava to the boiling water mixture. Stir well, cover with a lid, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the water is absorbed.
  6. 6Once the water has evaporated, add sugar and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Ensure the mixture is well combined.
  7. 7Turn off the heat and keep the pan covered for 2 to 3 minutes. Serve the rava upuma hot.
