Vermicelli Upuma/Sevai Upuma

A traditional Indian breakfast dish made with roasted vermicelli, sautéed with onions, green chillies, and curry leaves, then cooked with water and finished with shredded coconut.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Vermicelli (Roasted)
  • 1 unit Onions
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 1 unit Green chillies
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 3 tablespoons Coconut, shredded (Heap tbsp)
  • 1 tablespoon Channa dal (Optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Cashew nuts (Optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger, grated (Optional)

Instructions

  1. 1Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and allow them to crackle. Add onions, green chillies, and curry leaves. Sauté until the onions become translucent.
  2. 2Add water and salt to the pan and bring to a boil. Stir in the roasted vermicelli and cook until the vermicelli is tender and the water has evaporated.
  3. 3Add shredded coconut to the pan and sauté for 2 minutes. Optionally, add channa dal, cashew nuts, and grated ginger for additional flavor.
  4. 4Remove from heat and serve the vermicelli upuma hot. It can be enjoyed as a breakfast or snack.
