Broken Wheat Upma

A traditional Indian breakfast dish made with broken wheat, vegetables, and spices, cooked to a fluffy texture.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Broken Wheat (Also known as dalia or bulgar wheat)
  • 1 unit Carrot (Chopped)
  • 1 tbsp Ghee
  • 1 tbsp Salt
  • 1 handful Coconut, grated
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 unit White Onions (Finely chopped)
  • 2 unit Green Chillies (Chopped)
  • 6 unit Curry Leaves
  • 1 tbsp Sunflower Oil
  • 2 cups Water (For cooking broken wheat)

Instructions

  1. 1In a dry pan, lightly roast the broken wheat for a few seconds until aromatic.
  2. 2In a pressure cooker, combine the roasted broken wheat with water, ghee, and salt. Cook for one whistle.
  3. 3In a non-stick pan, heat sunflower oil. Add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter. Then add chopped onions, green chillies, curry leaves, and chopped carrot. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
  4. 4Add the cooked broken wheat to the pan with the sautéed vegetables. Stir well to combine. Finally, add the grated coconut and mix thoroughly.
