Banana Flower Recipe

A dish prepared with banana flower, known as 'koombu' in Malayalam, featuring coconut and spices for a traditional Kerala side dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 unit Banana blossom (banana flower)
  • 1 cup Coconut, shredded
  • 5 tablespoons Coconut oil
  • 3 units Dry red chillies
  • 6 units Garlic flakes
  • 3 tablespoons Short-grain rice
  • 1 to taste Salt
  • 0.25 cup Water (For cooking banana flower)

Instructions

  1. 1Finely chop the banana flower into very small pieces. Alternatively, use a mini chopper for convenience.
  2. 2Place the chopped banana flower in a clay cooking pot. Add salt to taste and sprinkle with a little water. Cover with a lid and cook until the banana flower is tender.
  3. 3Once the banana flower is cooked and the water has evaporated, add the shredded coconut and mix thoroughly.
  4. 4In a separate pan, heat the coconut oil. Add the crushed garlic, dry red chillies, and short-grain rice. Fry until the rice splutters and the garlic is fragrant.
  5. 5Mix the tempering into the cooked banana flower and coconut mixture. Serve hot as a side dish.
