Classic White Sauce
A simple and versatile white sauce, perfect as a base for gratins, pasta dishes, and more.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons Butter
- 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
- 1 cup Milk
- 0.25 teaspoon Salt
- 0.0625 teaspoon Ground black pepper (A pinch)
Instructions
- 1In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- 2Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until a smooth paste (roux) forms. Be careful not to brown the roux.
- 3Gradually whisk in the milk, a little at a time, ensuring each addition is fully incorporated before adding more. This prevents lumps from forming.
- 4Bring the sauce to a simmer, stirring constantly, until it thickens to your desired consistency. This usually takes 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper.
