Gravy

This classic gravy recipe from 1900 offers a rich and savory flavor, perfect for enhancing any meal. Made with simple ingredients like drippings, flour, milk, and water, this gravy is easy to prepare and adds a comforting touch to your dishes. The texture is creamy and smooth, making it an ideal accompaniment to steak, mashed potatoes, or biscuits.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Steak drippings or butter (If using drippings, ensure there are at least 2 tablespoons. If not, substitute with butter.)
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup Milk

Instructions

  1. 1Pour the steak drippings (or melted butter) into a saucepan. If using drippings, ensure there are at least 2 tablespoons. If not, add butter to equal the amount.
  2. 2Add the flour to the drippings (or butter) in the saucepan and mix well to form a roux. Cook, stirring constantly, until the flour browns slightly, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. 3Slowly add the water and milk to the roux, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Add the salt. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency, about 10-15 minutes.
