Cherry Cobbler
This classic Cherry Cobbler recipe from 1900 offers a comforting taste of history with a sweet and slightly tart flavor. The combination of juicy cherries, a simple dough, and a moderate oven creates a satisfying dessert. Serve warm with a dollop of cream for an indulgent treat.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Cherries, stemmed and pitted
- 2/3 cup Granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons All-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon Water
- 1/8 teaspoon Salt
- 1 cup All-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon Baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
- 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons Butter
- 6 tablespoons Milk
Instructions
- 1In a bowl, combine the cherries, sugar, flour, and salt. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Then, add the water and stir to combine.
- 2In a separate bowl, mix and sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Cut in the butter using a knife until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the milk and mix until a soft dough forms.
- 3Pour the cherry mixture into a deep glass or china baking dish. Shape the dough with your hands to fit over the cherries. Make three slits in the dough to allow steam to escape. Place in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
- 4Serve the cobbler warm, directly from the baking dish. Plain cream or whipped cream can be served alongside.
