PUZHUKU (Green gram Curry)
A traditional Kerala dish, Puzhuku is a light and nutritious curry made with green gram, coconut, and spices. It pairs well with kanzhi or porridge and is suitable for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Ingredients
- 2 handful Green Gram (Whole Mung Beans, Sabut Moong, Green Moong)
- 1 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
- 1 teaspoon Turmeric (Haldi)
- 3 units Dry Red Chillies
- 1 serving Salt
- 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil
- 1 cup Grated Coconut
- 2 cups Water
Instructions
- 1For optimal results, soak the green gram for a few hours. Place the soaked green gram in a pressure cooker, add water, salt, turmeric, broken dry red chillies, and red chilli powder. Cook for 5 whistles.
- 2Once the pressure cooker cools, open the lid and mash the cooked green gram. Add water as needed. In a separate bowl, mix grated coconut with a little water and squeeze to extract coconut milk. Add this to the green gram and bring to a boil. Finally, stir in the coconut oil to achieve a semi-thick gravy.
