Green Gram Thoran (Side Dish)

Thoran is a dry side dish made with green gram and a blend of spices, offering a flavorful accompaniment to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Green Gram (Also known as Whole Mung Beans or Sabut Moong)
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 0.5 teaspoon Cumin Seeds (Also known as Jeera)
  • 3 units Green Chillies (Slit lengthwise)
  • 1 inch Ginger (Chopped)
  • 2 pinches Asafetida (Also known as Hing)
  • 2 sprigs Coriander Leaves
  • 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  • 4 tablespoons Coconut, grated
  • 2 teaspoons Lemon Juice
  • 4 tablespoons Sunflower Oil

Instructions

  1. 1Rinse the green gram thoroughly. Place it in a pressure cooker with enough water and cook for 6 whistles. Once the pressure releases naturally, drain the water using a sieve.
  2. 2In a pan, heat the sunflower oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, allowing them to splutter. Add chopped ginger and slit green chillies, sautéing until fragrant. Stir in asafetida, coriander leaves, and curry leaves, mixing well.
  3. 3Add the cooked green gram to the pan with the tempering. Stir in the grated coconut and lemon juice. Mix thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly.
