Melagu Pongal

This variety of pongal dish is a spicy variant prepared with moong dal.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups White Rice
  • 2 cups Moong Dal
  • 1 tablespoon Chana Dal
  • 1 tablespoon Jeera (Cumin Seeds)
  • 1 tablespoon Black Crushed Pepper
  • 2 inch Ginger
  • 5 units Green Chillies
  • 2 sprigs Curry Leaves
  • 4 cups Water
  • 4 tablespoons Sunflower Oil
  • 3 teaspoons Salt

Instructions

  1. 1Soak the rice and moong dal separately in water for 10 minutes. Clean both thoroughly.
  2. 2Transfer the soaked rice and moong dal to a pressure cooker. Add water and cook for 4 whistles.
  3. 3In a separate pan, heat sunflower oil and add chana dal, jeera, black crushed pepper, chopped ginger, and green chillies. Sauté until aromatic. Add curry leaves and sauté briefly.
  4. 4Transfer the seasoned ingredients to the pressure cooker with the cooked rice and dal. Add salt and mix well. Cook for an additional 4 whistles.
