Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, cream together the butter (or shortening), eggs, flour, baking powder, and 1/2 cup sugar. Add the water and knead lightly until a dough forms. Do not over-knead.
  2. 2In a small bowl, mix together the remaining 1 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. In a separate bowl, combine the grated almonds and raisins. Reserve half of the sugar-cinnamon mixture and half of the almond-raisin mixture. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough not too thin. Brush the dough with melted butter (or shortening) and sprinkle with the remaining almond-raisin mixture and sugar-cinnamon mixture. Put a little of the almond and raisin mixture around the edge and roll around twice. Cut into small pieces.
  3. 3Brush every piece with melted butter (or shortening) and roll in the reserved sugar-cinnamon mixture and almonds. Place the sticks on a greased baking sheet. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
