Ginger-beer Powders

Ginger-beer Powders

A Victorian-era effervescent drink powder set, similar to Seidlitz powders but flavored with ginger. When mixed with water, the two powders create a fizzy, ginger-flavored beverage. The blue paper contains the alkaline ingredients, while the white paper contains the acid.

Ingredients

  • 1.75 grams Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) (Half a drachm; approximately 1/2 teaspoon)
  • 0.13 grams Powdered ginger (A grain or two; approximately 1/16 teaspoon)
  • 7 grams Sugar (Quarter of an ounce; approximately 1.5 teaspoons)
  • 1.6 grams Tartaric acid (25 grains; approximately 1/2 teaspoon)
  • 1 piece Blue paper or small envelope (For packaging the alkaline mixture)
  • 1 piece White paper or small envelope (For packaging the acid)
  • 1 cup Cold water (For serving; not part of the powder preparation)

Instructions

  1. 1In a small bowl, combine the bicarbonate of soda, powdered ginger, and sugar. Mix thoroughly until evenly distributed.
  2. 2Transfer the mixed powder into the blue paper or envelope. Fold carefully to seal and prevent moisture from entering.
  3. 3Measure the tartaric acid and place it in the white paper or envelope. Fold carefully to seal and keep separate from the blue paper.
  4. 4When ready to drink, pour cold water into a glass. Add the contents of the blue paper first and stir to dissolve. Then add the contents of the white paper and stir quickly. The mixture will effervesce vigorously. Drink immediately while fizzing.
