Seidlitz Powders
A traditional effervescent laxative powder preparation consisting of two separate powders (blue paper and white paper) that are dissolved sequentially in water to create a fizzing drink. When combined, the tartrate and bicarbonate react with tartaric acid to produce carbon dioxide.
Ingredients
- 2 drachms (7.8 g) Rochelle salt (potassium sodium tartrate) (For the blue paper packet)
- 2 scruples (2.6 g) Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) (For the blue paper packet)
- 30 grains (1.9 g) Tartaric acid (For the white paper packet)
- 0.5 cup (120 ml) Water, cold (For dissolving blue paper contents)
- 0.25 cup (60 ml) Water, cold (For dissolving white paper contents)
Instructions
- 1Measure 2 drachms (7.8 g) of Rochelle salt and 2 scruples (2.6 g) of sodium bicarbonate. Mix together and wrap in blue paper or place in a blue-labeled packet.
- 2Measure 30 grains (1.9 g) of tartaric acid and wrap in white paper or place in a white-labeled packet. Keep separate from the blue packet.
- 3When ready to use, empty the contents of the blue paper packet into a glass containing 1/2 cup (120 ml) of cold water. Stir until completely dissolved.
- 4In a separate glass, dissolve the contents of the white paper packet in 1/4 cup (60 ml) of cold water. Stir until completely dissolved.
- 5Pour the white paper solution into the blue paper solution. The mixture will effervesce vigorously. Drink immediately while still fizzing for best effect.
