- 4Remove from heat and let cool slightly for about 5 minutes. Stir in the vanilla extract. The filling will thicken further as it cools.
- 5For Nut or Fruit Filling: After the chocolate filling has cooled slightly, stir in chopped walnuts, almonds, figs, dates, or raisins, separately or in combination, to your desired consistency.
- 6For Coconut Filling: In a clean, dry bowl, beat the egg whites with a fork or whisk until stiff peaks form. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until the mixture is thick enough to spread. Spread over cake and sprinkle thickly with fresh grated coconut.
