Vegetable White Sauce

Vegetable White Sauce

This classic vegetable white sauce is a simple yet versatile base for many dishes, offering a creamy and comforting texture. The sauce is made with butter, flour, and milk, creating a rich and savory flavor profile. An optional egg yolk adds extra richness and a delicate, silky texture, making it perfect for vegetables or as a base for other sauces.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 large Egg yolk (Optional)

Instructions

  1. 1In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until a smooth paste (roux) forms. This step takes about 2 minutes.
  2. 2Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Bring the sauce to a simmer, stirring constantly, and cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency. Season with salt. This step takes about 15 minutes.
  3. 3If desired, remove the sauce from the heat and whisk in the egg yolk until fully incorporated. The heat from the sauce will cook the egg yolk. Serve immediately.
