Vegetable White Sauce
This classic vegetable white sauce is a simple yet versatile base for many dishes, offering a creamy and comforting texture. The sauce is made with butter, flour, and milk, creating a rich and savory flavor profile. An optional egg yolk adds extra richness and a delicate, silky texture, making it perfect for vegetables or as a base for other sauces.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons Butter
- 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
- 1 cup Milk
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
- 1 large Egg yolk (Optional)
Instructions
- 1In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until a smooth paste (roux) forms. This step takes about 2 minutes.
- 2Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Bring the sauce to a simmer, stirring constantly, and cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency. Season with salt. This step takes about 15 minutes.
- 3If desired, remove the sauce from the heat and whisk in the egg yolk until fully incorporated. The heat from the sauce will cook the egg yolk. Serve immediately.
