These classic apple dumplings are a comforting and satisfying dessert, perfect for a cozy evening. Flaky dough encases sweet and tart apple quarters, spiced with cinnamon and sugar, creating a delightful combination of textures and flavors. Serve warm with a dollop of cream for an extra touch of indulgence.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup Water
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 4 Apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (or vegetable shortening) (Originally lard. Substituted with butter for modern preference. Can also use vegetable shortening for similar texture.)
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons Water (Quantity estimated (not specified in original recipe))
  • as needed Heavy cream (for serving) (Quantity estimated (not specified in original recipe))

Instructions

  1. 1In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter (or shortening) using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the water and mix until a soft dough forms.
  2. 2On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Peel, core, and quarter the apples. Cut the dough into four equal squares. Place one apple quarter in the center of each dough square. Sprinkle each with sugar and cinnamon. Moisten the edges of the dough with water and bring the corners up around the apple, pressing to seal. Pierce the top of each dumpling with a fork to allow steam to escape.
  3. 3Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the dumplings upside down on a baking sheet. Bake for 35 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  4. 4Serve warm with a dollop of heavy cream.
