Ingredients
- 1/2 cup All-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon Baking powder
- 1/8 teaspoon Salt
- 4 tablespoons Granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon Butter (or vegetable shortening) (Originally lard. Substituted with butter for modern preference. Can also use vegetable shortening for similar texture.)
- 2 tablespoons Milk
- 2 Apples
- 1/2 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon Water (Quantity estimated (not specified in original recipe))
Instructions
- 1In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter using a pastry blender or a knife until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the milk and mix until a soft dough forms.
- 2On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
- 3Wash, peel, and quarter the apples. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
- 4Cut the dough into 5-inch squares. Place two apple quarters in the center of each square. Moisten the edges of the dough with water and bring the four corners together around the apple, pinching to seal.
- 5Place the dumplings in a baking pan and bake in a moderate oven preheated to 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the dough is golden brown.
- 6Serve warm with cream, if desired.
