A popular Indian snack, Mathri is best enjoyed with tea. This crispy, savory treat is made from a spiced dough and deep-fried to perfection.

Ingredients

  • 500 gms All purpose flour (Also known as refined flour or maida)
  • 2 tbsp Ajwain (Also known as carrom seeds)
  • 5 cups Oil (For deep frying)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Cumin seeds (Also known as jeera)
  • 2 tbsp Sun-dried fenugreek leaves (Also known as kasoori methi or kasuri methi)
  • 0 as needed Water (To form a tight dough)

Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, combine 500 grams of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, 2 tablespoons of ajwain, 0.5 teaspoon of cumin seeds, and 2 tablespoons of sun-dried fenugreek leaves. Add 3-4 tablespoons of oil and mix well. Gradually add water to form a tight dough. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes.
  2. 2Divide the dough into small balls, each weighing approximately 50 grams. Roll each ball into a small circle.
  3. 3Heat 5 cups of oil in a kadhai or deep pan over medium heat. Deep fry the rolled dough circles until they are golden brown and crispy. Allow them to cool before serving.
