To Remove Ironmould (Rust Stains)

Ingredients

• 0.5 teaspoon Oxalic acid, powdered, or salts of lemon (Available at hardware stores or online; salts of lemon (potassium binoxalate) is a safer alternative)
• 2 tablespoons Warm water (For mixing with the acid)
• 2 cups Clear water, for rinsing (Room temperature or cool water)

Instructions

1. 1Mix the powdered oxalic acid or salts of lemon with warm water to create a paste or solution. Wear gloves when handling oxalic acid as it is toxic and can irritate skin.
2. 2Rub the oxalic acid solution directly onto the rust-stained spot using your gloved finger or a clean cloth. Work the solution gently into the fabric fibers.
3. 3Allow the oxalic acid solution to remain on the stain for a few minutes to break down the rust. Do not let it dry completely on the fabric.
4. 4Rinse the treated area well in clear water, ensuring all traces of the oxalic acid are removed. Rinse multiple times if necessary. The stain should be gone or significantly lightened.
5. 5Launder the garment as usual to remove any remaining residue. Check that the stain is completely gone before drying, as heat can set any remaining rust.
