How to Wash Delicate Lace
A traditional method for hand-washing and restoring delicate lace items using gentle techniques and natural starching to preserve the fabric's beauty and structure.
Ingredients
- 1 piece Lace item (scarf, veil, or trim) (Any delicate lace item needing cleaning)
- 2 tablespoons White soap, mild (such as Castile or pure soap flakes) (Best quality white soap for delicate fabrics)
- 8 cups Cold water (For soaking and washing)
- 2 cups Liquid starch or rice water (Thin consistency for light stiffening)
- 1 length White cotton thread (For basting lace in place during washing)
Instructions
- 1Fold the lace carefully and baste it on each side with white cotton thread to keep it secure during washing. This prevents tangling and damage.
- 2Place the basted lace in a bowl of cold water and let it soak overnight (8-12 hours). This loosens dirt and prepares the fibers for gentle cleaning.
- 3Remove lace from soaking water. In fresh cold water with white soap, gently rub and squeeze the lace (do not twist or wring). Repeat this washing process in 3-4 changes of soapy water until the lace is clean.
- 4Rinse the lace well in several changes of clean cold water until all soap is removed and water runs clear.
- 5Dip the rinsed lace into thin liquid starch or rice water. Gently squeeze out excess liquid. Remove the basting thread carefully.
- 6Spread the lace flat on a clean blanket placed on a bed. For scarves or veils, pin them out tightly on a cloth on the floor to maintain shape. Allow to dry until nearly completely dry (2-4 hours depending on humidity).
- 7When nearly dry, carefully pick out and straighten the lace edges and patterns. Fold the lace neatly and allow to finish drying completely (30-60 minutes).
- 8When completely dry, wrap the lace in an old cotton handkerchief, then fold inside a towel. Place on a rug or blanket laid on a hard surface (stone or floor). Using a heavy wooden rolling pin or pestle, beat the lace firmly and evenly until it looks smooth and pressed (similar to ironing).

Washed or Wet Rice Flour
This foundational technique produces a specialized "wet" rice flour essential for specific traditional Parsi and Gujarati confections. Unlike standard dry rice flour, this method involves washing and shade-drying the grains to retain specific internal moisture before grinding, resulting in a flour with unique binding properties. It is particularly crucial for recipes requiring a delicate texture that store-bought dry flour cannot replicate, offering a superior result for authentic preparations.
