To Clean Marble
A traditional method for cleaning and polishing marble surfaces using a simple boiled solution of cream of tartar, alum, and salt. This gentle yet effective technique removes stains and restores shine to marble without harsh chemicals.
Ingredients
- 1 ounce Cream of tartar (Approximately 2 tablespoons)
- 1 ounce Alum (Approximately 2 tablespoons; available at pharmacies or spice shops)
- 1 ounce Common salt (Approximately 2 tablespoons)
- 1 gallon Water (For boiling the cleaning solution)
Instructions
- 1Measure out 1 ounce each of cream of tartar, alum, and common salt. Pour 1 gallon of water into a large pot.
- 2Add the cream of tartar, alum, and salt to the water. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally to dissolve the ingredients completely.
- 3For small marble items, immerse them in the boiling solution. For larger marble surfaces like countertops or floors, apply the hot solution with a sponge or cloth, working in sections. Allow the solution to work on the marble surface.
- 4Remove the marble from the solution (or wipe away the solution from the surface). Immediately rub dry with a clean, soft cloth using circular motions. The marble will have a fine polish when completely dry.
- 5To keep marble looking its best, clean it using this method at stated periods. Regular maintenance will prevent heavy tarnishing and keep the marble polished.
