Instructions
- 1Peel the onions and place them in a bowl of cold water. Let them soak for 1 hour to mellow their flavor.
- 2In a large pot, combine the milk and water. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over high heat.
- 3Drain the soaked onions and add them to the boiling milk and water mixture. Add salt. Reduce heat to medium and boil gently until the onions are tender when pierced with a fork, about 20-25 minutes.
- 4While the onions are cooking, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat or in the microwave. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper if desired.
- 5When the onions are tender, drain them well using a slotted spoon or colander. Transfer to a serving dish and pour the melted butter over them. Serve immediately.
