Honey and Vinegar Cough Syrup
A traditional homemade cough remedy combining honey, treacle (molasses), vinegar, and ipecacuanha wine. This pleasant-tasting mixture was historically used for recent coughs in both adults and children. Note: This is a historical recipe and should not replace modern medical advice or treatment.
Ingredients
- 5 fluid ounces Honey (Approximately 150ml or 2/3 cup)
- 4 ounces Treacle (or blackstrap molasses) (Approximately 115g or 1/3 cup)
- 7 fluid ounces Best quality vinegar (apple cider vinegar recommended) (Approximately 200ml or scant 1 cup)
- 2 drachms Ipecacuanha wine (Approximately 7ml or 1.5 teaspoons. Historical ingredient - not commonly available today and should not be used without medical supervision)

- 1Measure and combine 5 fluid ounces of honey, 4 ounces of treacle (molasses), and 7 fluid ounces of vinegar in a small saucepan or earthenware pot.
- 2Place the pot over medium-low heat and bring to a gentle simmer. Allow to simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- 3Remove the pot from the heat and allow the mixture to cool until lukewarm (approximately body temperature or slightly cooler).
- 4Once the mixture has cooled to lukewarm, stir in 2 drachms (approximately 7ml or 1.5 teaspoons) of ipecacuanha wine. Mix thoroughly to combine.
- 5Transfer the mixture to a clean glass bottle or jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store in a cool place. The historical dose was one tablespoonful every four hours for adults. This is a historical remedy and should not be used without consulting a healthcare professional.
