Boiled and Mashed Turnips
A classic preparation of turnips, boiled until tender and mashed with butter and milk for a smooth, creamy side dish. Can also be served plain without mashing.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds Turnips, washed and peeled (About 4-5 medium turnips)
- 1 teaspoon Salt (For boiling water)
- 2 tablespoons Butter (For mashed version only)
- 0.5 cup Milk (For mashed version only)
Instructions
- 1Wash the turnips thoroughly, peel them, and place them in a bowl of cold water to prevent discoloration.
- 2Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add salt to the boiling water. Add the peeled turnips and boil for 45 to 60 minutes, or until very tender when pierced with a fork.
- 3Drain the cooked turnips thoroughly in a colander. If serving plain, transfer to a serving dish at this point.
- 4Transfer the drained turnips to a saucepan. Add the butter and mash the turnips very smoothly using a potato masher or beater until no lumps remain.
- 5Add the milk to the mashed turnips and mix well until fully incorporated. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir frequently until the turnips are hot throughout, about 3-4 minutes.
- 6Transfer the hot mashed turnips to a serving dish and serve immediately.
