Boiled and Mashed Turnips

Boiled and Mashed Turnips

A classic preparation of turnips, boiled until tender and mashed with butter and milk for a smooth, creamy side dish. Can also be served plain without mashing.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Turnips, washed and peeled (About 4-5 medium turnips)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt (For boiling water)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (For mashed version only)
  • 0.5 cup Milk (For mashed version only)

Instructions

  1. 1Wash the turnips thoroughly, peel them, and place them in a bowl of cold water to prevent discoloration.
  2. 2Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add salt to the boiling water. Add the peeled turnips and boil for 45 to 60 minutes, or until very tender when pierced with a fork.
  3. 3Drain the cooked turnips thoroughly in a colander. If serving plain, transfer to a serving dish at this point.
  4. 4Transfer the drained turnips to a saucepan. Add the butter and mash the turnips very smoothly using a potato masher or beater until no lumps remain.
  5. 5Add the milk to the mashed turnips and mix well until fully incorporated. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir frequently until the turnips are hot throughout, about 3-4 minutes.
  6. 6Transfer the hot mashed turnips to a serving dish and serve immediately.
