Apple Sauce

Apple Sauce

A classic homemade apple sauce with butter and brown sugar, perfect as an accompaniment to roasted meats or pork dishes. This simple sauce features tender cooked apples flavored with lemon peel.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples Apples, pared, cored, and sliced (About 1.5 pounds; use tart cooking apples like Granny Smith or Bramley)
  • 1 cup Water (For boiling the apples)
  • 1 strip Lemon peel (About 2 inches long, avoid white pith)
  • 1 tablespoon Butter (About the size of a walnut)
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar (Adjust to taste depending on tartness of apples)

Instructions

  1. 1Pare, core, and slice the apples into even pieces, about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. 2Place the sliced apples in a saucepan with the water and lemon peel. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until the apples are tender and easily mashed with a fork, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. 3Remove and discard the lemon peel. Using a potato masher or fork, mash the cooked apples to your desired consistency - smooth or slightly chunky.
  4. 4Add the butter and brown sugar to the mashed apples. Stir well to combine.
  5. 5Heat the apple sauce over low heat, stirring constantly, until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved, about 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a sauce-tureen or serving bowl and serve warm.
