Royal Unfermented Bread

A quick bread recipe from the late 19th century, using baking powder instead of yeast for leavening.

Ingredients

  • 1 quart Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Royal Baking Powder
  • 1.5 pints Milk

Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, sift together 1 quart flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, and 2 teaspoons Royal Baking Powder.
  2. 2Add 1 1/2 pints milk to the dry ingredients. Mix smoothly and rapidly into a softer dough than can be handled.
  3. 3Turn the dough from the bowl into a greased bread pan.
  4. 4Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake in a moderate oven for 45 minutes. Protect the top by placing paper on top during the first fifteen minutes of baking.
