Abernethy Biscuit
A classic biscuit recipe.
Ingredients
- 3 pints Flour
- 2 tablespoonfuls Sugar
- 1 teaspoonful Salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoonfuls Royal Baking Powder
- 4 tablespoonfuls Butter (or vegetable shortening) (Originally lard. Substituted with butter for modern preference. Can also use vegetable shortening for similar texture.)
- 2 tablespoonfuls Caraway seeds
- 2 eggs Eggs
- 1 pint Milk
Instructions
- 1Sift together flour, sugar, salt, and Royal Baking Powder. Rub in the cold butter (or vegetable shortening). Add caraway seeds, beaten eggs, and milk; mix into a smooth, firm dough.
- 2Flour the board. Turn out the dough, give it a few quick, vigorous kneadings. Roll out to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Cut into biscuits the size of a pudding saucer. Prick with a fork. Lay on a greased baking tin. Bake in a hot oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes.
