Chocolate Pie Crust

Chocolate Pie Crust

This classic chocolate pie crust recipe from 1900 offers a rich, buttery, and slightly sweet base for your favorite pies. The flaky texture and delicate flavor create a perfect balance with any filling, from fruit to cream. Made with simple ingredients like flour, lard, and ice water, this crust is a comforting and satisfying treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/3 cup Butter (or vegetable shortening) (Originally lard. Substituted with butter for modern preference. Can also use vegetable shortening for similar texture.)
  • 3 tablespoons Ice water

Instructions

  1. 1In a bowl, mix the flour and salt. Cut in the butter (or shortening) using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the ice water slowly, stirring with a fork or knife until the dough just comes together. Add more water, a teaspoon at a time, if needed.
  2. 2On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough thin. Fit the dough onto a tin pie pan. Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork to prevent it from puffing up. Bake in a preheated hot oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 7 minutes, or until the crust is light brown.
