Step 1
Grind the following ingredients together with very little water :
shredded coconut,
4 dried red chillies,
kashmiri chili powder,
3 shallots or 1/2 a medium onion,
tamarind,
ginger,
garlic,
salt
Step 2
Now in a pan heat some coconut oil and add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds splutter, add urad dal, 1 dry red chili broken in half and curry leaves.
Step 3
In the mean time chop 2 shalots into small pieces and
once the urad dal is slightly golden brown, add the chopped onions.
Step 4
Once the onions have turned light golden brown, pour the mixture over the ground coconut paste prepared above. Mix well and serve with idli or dosa.
