Savory Baked Mashed Potatoes
This unique Parsi-style potato dish transforms simple mashed potatoes into a savory baked casserole with a rich, golden crust. Boiled potatoes are whipped with milk until creamy, then topped with grated cheese, savory meat gravy, and butter before being baked to perfection. The result is a comforting side dish that combines a fluffy interior with a flavorful, browned exterior.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Potatoes (Originally '1 ratal'. Peeling and boiling required.)
- 1 cup Milk (Originally '1 pasher' (approx 1 cup).)
- 2 1/2 tablespoons Butter (Originally '3 tolas'. Divided use (greasing and topping).)
- 1 tablespoon Grated cheese (Cheddar or Parmesan) (Originally '1 tola vilayati paneer' (foreign cheese). Grated with a nutmeg grater.)
- 1 teaspoon Salt (Originally '1 flat spoonful'.)
- 1/4 cup Meat gravy or roast drippings (Originally '1 wine glass' of roast meat or salted meat gravy.)
Instructions
- 1Boil the potatoes until tender. Peel and mash them thoroughly until smooth.
- 2Mix the milk and salt into the mashed potatoes until well combined and creamy.
- 3Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Take a small amount of the butter and grease a small pie dish. Spread the potato mixture evenly into the dish.
- 4Sprinkle the grated cheese over the potatoes, then pour the gravy over the top. Dot the surface with the remaining butter. Place in the hot oven and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the top is red-brown and golden.
