Ingredients
- 1 cup Brown sugar
- 1/2 cup Butter (or butter substitute)
- 1/2 teaspoon Ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
- 1 cup Buttermilk (or milk + 1 tablespoon lemon juice/vinegar) (Originally sour milk. Substituted with buttermilk for modern preference.)
- 1 teaspoon Baking soda
- 2 cups All-purpose flour
- 1 cup Chopped raisins
Instructions
- 1Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Chop the raisins if not already done. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
- 2In a large bowl, cream together the brown sugar and butter (or butter substitute) until light and fluffy.
- 3Add the ground cloves and cinnamon. Stir in the buttermilk and baking soda.
- 4Gradually add the flour to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Fold in the chopped raisins.
- 5Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
