To Remove Ironmould (Rust Stains)
A traditional method for removing rust stains from fabric using oxalic acid or salts of lemon. This technique is effective for treating ironmould marks on clothing and linens.
Ingredients
- 0.5 teaspoon Oxalic acid, powdered, or salts of lemon (Available at hardware stores or online; salts of lemon (potassium binoxalate) is a safer alternative)
- 2 tablespoons Warm water (For mixing with the acid)
- 2 cups Clear water, for rinsing (Room temperature or cool water)
Instructions
- 1Mix the powdered oxalic acid or salts of lemon with warm water to create a paste or solution. Wear gloves when handling oxalic acid as it is toxic and can irritate skin.
- 2Rub the oxalic acid solution directly onto the rust-stained spot using your gloved finger or a clean cloth. Work the solution gently into the fabric fibers.
- 3Allow the oxalic acid solution to remain on the stain for a few minutes to break down the rust. Do not let it dry completely on the fabric.
- 4Rinse the treated area well in clear water, ensuring all traces of the oxalic acid are removed. Rinse multiple times if necessary. The stain should be gone or significantly lightened.
- 5Launder the garment as usual to remove any remaining residue. Check that the stain is completely gone before drying, as heat can set any remaining rust.
