To Clean Feathers
A traditional method for cleaning and preparing feathers using lime water, suitable for craft projects, pillow stuffing, or historical textile work. This process removes dirt, oils, and odors from feathers.
Ingredients
- 1 gallon Water (For making lime water solution)
- 0.5 pound Quicklime (calcium oxide) (Available at agricultural supply stores; handle with care as it's caustic)
- 1 batch Feathers, dirty (Amount depends on project needs)
- 1 as needed Cold water (For rinsing)
Instructions
- 1Add half a pound of quicklime to one gallon of water in a large container. Stir the mixture well to combine.
- 2Allow the lime water mixture to stand undisturbed overnight so the lime particles settle to the bottom.
- 3Carefully pour off only the perfectly clear water from the top, leaving the settled lime sediment at the bottom. This clear liquid is your lime water for cleaning.
- 4Place the dirty feathers into a deep tub and pour in enough of the clear lime water to completely cover them. Ensure all feathers are submerged.
- 5Let the feathers stand in the lime water for 2 to 3 days, stirring them frequently (at least 2-3 times per day) to ensure even cleaning.
- 6Transfer the feathers into a mesh bag or pillowcase and wash them thoroughly in cold water, changing the water several times until all lime residue is removed.
- 7Turn the feathers out onto sieves or screens. Take small portions of feathers and squeeze them firmly with your hands to wring out as much water as possible.
- 8Carefully separate the feathers, picking out any hard quills and stripping the soft down from the large feather shafts. Sort as desired for your project.
- 9Spread the cleaned feathers on a clean floor or large surface in a well-ventilated area with good air circulation. Turn and shake them frequently to ensure even drying. This may take several days depending on humidity.
- 10Once completely dry, place the feathers into cloth bags and beat them gently on a hard surface (like a stone or sturdy table) with a wooden mallet or similar tool to fluff them and restore their loft.
