Spermaceti Ointment for Dressing Blisters

A traditional healing ointment made with white wax, spermaceti, and olive oil, used for dressing blisters. This recipe creates a protective, emollient salve that was commonly used in historical first aid.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce White wax (beeswax) (Modern substitute: use white beeswax, approximately 28 grams or 2 tablespoons)
  • 0.25 ounce Spermaceti (Historical ingredient from whale oil; modern substitute: use cetyl alcohol or additional beeswax (approximately 7 grams or 1/2 tablespoon))
  • 2 ounces Olive oil (Approximately 60 ml or 4 tablespoons)

Instructions

  1. 1Measure out the white wax, spermaceti (or modern substitute), and olive oil. Have a clean container ready for the finished ointment.
  2. 2Place the olive oil in a double boiler or heat-safe bowl over simmering water. Add the white wax and spermaceti. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until both the wax and spermaceti are completely melted and incorporated into the oil.
  3. 3Remove the mixture from heat and stir continuously as it cools. Continue stirring until the mixture becomes cold and reaches a smooth, creamy consistency. This prevents separation and ensures a uniform ointment.
  4. 4Transfer the cooled ointment to a clean, airtight container. Store in a cool, dry place. The ointment is ready to use for dressing blisters.
