Soothing Throat Gargle with Myrrh and Vinegar
A traditional antiseptic gargle for sore throats using tincture of myrrh and vinegar. This gargle is designed to reduce inflammation and provide relief for irritated throats without promoting suppuration. It can be used for both inflamed and relaxed sore throats.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon Tincture of myrrh (Original recipe called for 2 drachms (approximately 1 teaspoon). Available at pharmacies or health food stores.)
- 0.5 cup Water, distilled or boiled and cooled (Original recipe called for 4 ounces. Use distilled water or boiled water that has been cooled to room temperature.)
- 1 tablespoon White vinegar or apple cider vinegar (Original recipe called for half an ounce (approximately 1 tablespoon). Apple cider vinegar may be more palatable.)
Instructions
- 1If using tap water, boil it first and allow it to cool to room temperature. If using distilled water, measure out 1/2 cup into a clean glass or measuring cup.
- 2Add 1 teaspoon of tincture of myrrh to the water. Myrrh has natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
- 3Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the mixture. The vinegar provides additional antimicrobial properties and helps reduce inflammation.
- 4Stir the mixture well to ensure all ingredients are fully combined. The gargle should be uniform in color and consistency.
- 5Take a small mouthful of the gargle, tilt your head back, and gargle for 30 seconds, ensuring the liquid reaches the back of your throat. Spit out after gargling. Do not swallow. Repeat 2-3 times per session, using the gargle 3-4 times daily or as needed for sore throat relief.
