Roche's Embrocation for Whooping Cough (Historical Topical Remedy)
A historical topical chest rub combining olive oil, oil of amber, and oil of cloves, used in the 19th century for whooping cough and children's coughs. This is a historical remedy and should not replace modern medical treatment. For informational purposes only.
Ingredients
- 8 fluid ounces Olive oil (Base oil for the embrocation)
- 4 fluid ounces Oil of amber (succinite oil) (Historical ingredient, difficult to source today)
- 1 teaspoon Oil of cloves (clove essential oil) (Sufficient quantity to scent strongly; adjust to preference)
Instructions
- 1Measure 8 fluid ounces of olive oil into a clean glass bottle or jar with a tight-fitting lid
- 2Add 4 fluid ounces of oil of amber to the olive oil in the bottle
- 3Add approximately 1 teaspoon of oil of cloves (or more to taste) to scent the mixture strongly
- 4Secure the lid tightly and shake the bottle vigorously for 2-3 minutes to thoroughly combine all oils
- 5Store in a cool, dark place. When needed, shake well before use. According to historical instructions, rub gently on the chest to stimulate the skin. For whooping cough, do not use for the first ten days of the disease. This is a historical remedy only; consult modern medical professionals for treatment
