Quinine Draught
A historical medicinal tonic containing quinine sulphate, traditionally used for digestive complaints and liver issues. This recipe is for historical reference only and should not be consumed without medical supervision.
Ingredients
- 2 grains Quinine sulphate (Approximately 130mg. WARNING: Quinine is a medication and should only be used under medical supervision.)
- 2 drops Diluted sulphuric acid (Used as an acidifying agent. Extremely dangerous - do not attempt without pharmaceutical training.)
- 1 drachm Spirit of nutmegs (nutmeg tincture) (Approximately 3.7ml or 3/4 teaspoon. An alcoholic extract of nutmeg.)
- 10 drachms Distilled water (Approximately 37ml or 2.5 tablespoons)
Instructions
- 1Carefully measure 2 grains (approximately 130mg) of quinine sulphate powder using a pharmaceutical scale.
- 2Pour 10 drachms (approximately 37ml or 2.5 tablespoons) of distilled water into a clean glass or pharmaceutical bottle.
- 3Add the measured quinine sulphate to the distilled water in the container.
- 4Very carefully add 2 drops of diluted sulphuric acid to the mixture. Handle with extreme caution.
- 5Measure and add 1 drachm (approximately 3.7ml or 3/4 teaspoon) of spirit of nutmegs to the mixture.
- 6Seal the container and shake gently but thoroughly to combine all ingredients into a uniform solution.
- 7According to the original recipe, this draught was to be taken daily at midday. WARNING: This is a historical medicinal preparation containing prescription medication and dangerous chemicals. Do not prepare or consume without proper medical and pharmaceutical supervision.
