Milk Toast
A classic, comforting dish designed to utilize stale bread. Slices of bread are toasted to a light brown, spread sparingly with butter or marmalade, and soaked in boiling milk. A simple, soothing meal often served for breakfast or as a light supper.
Ingredients
- 2 slices Stale bread slices (White or whole wheat bread works well)
- 1 cup Whole milk (Approximately 240ml)
- 1 tsp Butter, softened (Use sparingly; can be substituted with marmalade)
- 1 tbsp Orange marmalade (Optional alternative to butter, often preferred by children)
Instructions
- 1Toast the stale bread slices until they are a light brown color. If using a toaster or grill, monitor closely to prevent burning.
- 2While the bread is toasting, pour the milk into a small saucepan and heat over medium heat until it reaches a boil. Watch carefully to ensure it does not boil over.
- 3Inspect the toast; if any parts are blackened, gently scrape them off with a knife. Spread a very thin layer of butter on the toast. Alternatively, spread a thin layer of marmalade instead of butter.
- 4Lay the prepared toast at the bottom of a soup plate or wide bowl. Immediately pour the boiling milk over the toast. Serve hot.
