Ingredients

  • 0.5 drachm Compound extract of colocynth (Approximately 1.77 grams. Colocynth is a powerful purgative and potentially toxic.)
  • 1 scruple Compound rhubarb pill (Approximately 1.3 grams. A traditional pharmaceutical preparation.)
  • 10 grains Castille soap (Approximately 0.65 grams. Used as a binding agent and mild laxative.)
  • 5 drops Oil of juniper (Essential oil used for flavoring and carminative properties.)

Instructions

  1. 1Place the compound extract of colocynth, compound rhubarb pill, Castille soap, and oil of juniper together in a mortar or mixing vessel.
  2. 2Using a pestle or mixing tool, beat and work all ingredients together thoroughly until they form a uniform, cohesive mass that can be shaped.
  3. 3Divide the mass into twelve equal portions and roll each portion into a pill shape. Each pill should be uniform in size to ensure consistent dosing.
  4. 4Store the finished pills in a cool, dry place in an appropriate container. Historical dosage was one pill at bedtime, with some persons requiring two pills. WARNING: This is a historical recipe only and should not be prepared or consumed.
