Japanese Rice Paste (Traditional Adhesive)

A traditional white adhesive paste made from rice flour and water that dries nearly transparent. Ideal for paper crafts, bookbinding, and delicate repair work.

Ingredients

  • 0.25 cup Rice flour (White rice flour works best for a beautifully white paste)
  • 0.5 cup Cold water (Start with cold water to prevent lumps)

Instructions

  1. 1In a small saucepan, thoroughly mix the rice flour with cold water until completely smooth with no lumps. Stir vigorously to create a uniform mixture.
  2. 2Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and bring to a gentle boil, stirring constantly to prevent scorching or lumps from forming. The mixture will thicken and become translucent as it heats.
  3. 3Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature. The paste will thicken further as it cools. Transfer to a clean container with a lid. Use while still fresh, applying with a brush or spatula. The paste dries beautifully white and almost transparent.
