Homemade Mustard
A traditional Indian-style prepared mustard condiment, made from mustard seeds ground and mixed to create a flavorful paste.
Ingredients
- 0.5 cup Mustard seeds, yellow or brown (Yellow mustard seeds for milder flavor, brown for more pungent)
- 0.25 cup Water, cold (For grinding and consistency adjustment)
- 2 tablespoons White vinegar or apple cider vinegar (For preservation and tang)
- 0.5 teaspoon Salt (To taste)
- 0.25 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Optional, for color and flavor)
Instructions
- 1Place mustard seeds in a bowl and cover with cold water. Let soak for 2-3 hours or overnight to soften the seeds for easier grinding.
- 2Drain the soaked mustard seeds through a fine mesh strainer, discarding the soaking water.
- 3Place the drained mustard seeds in a mortar and pestle or food processor. Add 2 tablespoons of fresh water and pound or process until you achieve a smooth paste. Add more water gradually if needed to reach desired consistency.
- 4Transfer the ground mustard paste to a clean bowl. Add vinegar, salt, and turmeric (if using). Mix thoroughly until well combined.
- 5For a smoother consistency, press the mustard paste through muslin cloth or a fine strainer to remove any remaining seed husks. Transfer to a clean, sterilized jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store in the refrigerator.
