Herbal Expectorant Emulsion for Persistent Coughs

Herbal Expectorant Emulsion for Persistent Coughs

A traditional herbal remedy combining gum ammoniac with almond emulsion to help relieve chronic coughs and asthma symptoms when no inflammation is present. This expectorant mixture was historically used for respiratory support.

Ingredients

  • 2 drachms (approximately 1/4 ounce or 7 grams) Gum ammoniac (A traditional herbal resin with expectorant properties - consult a healthcare provider before use)
  • 0.5 pint (1 cup or 240 ml) Water (For dissolving the gum ammoniac)
  • 1 ounce (2 tablespoons or 30 ml) Sweet almond oil (For the almond emulsion base)
  • 1 large Egg yolk (Acts as emulsifier for the almond mixture)
  • 5 ounces (approximately 2/3 cup or 150 ml) Orange flower water (Aromatic flavoring agent)
  • 0.5 ounce (1 tablespoon or 15 grams) Gum arabic (acacia gum) (Creates mucilage for the emulsion)
  • 1.5 drachms (approximately 1 teaspoon or 5 ml) Ipecacuanha wine (Traditional expectorant - consult healthcare provider, may cause nausea)
  • 0.5 ounce (1 tablespoon or 15 ml) Marshmallow root syrup (Soothes throat and respiratory passages)

Instructions

  1. 1Place 2 drachms (7 grams) of gum ammoniac in a mortar or bowl. Gradually add the water in small amounts while rubbing or grinding continuously to create a smooth mixture.
  2. 2Once the gum ammoniac is thoroughly mixed with water, strain the mixture through a fine linen cloth or cheesecloth to remove any undissolved particles. Set aside.
  3. 3Dissolve the gum arabic in a small amount of warm water to create a mucilage (thick, gel-like consistency). This should yield about half an ounce of mucilage.
  4. 4In a clean bowl, combine the sweet almond oil and egg yolk. Mix thoroughly until well blended and emulsified.
  5. 5Add the orange flower water, gum arabic mucilage, ipecacuanha wine, and marshmallow syrup to the almond-egg mixture. Mix all ingredients together thoroughly until a smooth, uniform emulsion is formed.
  6. 6To use, combine 1-2 tablespoons of the strained gum ammoniac mixture with an equal quantity (1-2 tablespoons) of the almond emulsion. Mix well before taking. This combined dose can be taken when cough symptoms are troublesome.
