Embrocation for Sprains and Bruises
A historical topical liniment combining camphor and opium tincture, traditionally used for sprains, bruises, and rheumatic pain after inflammation has subsided. Ingredients
- 1.5 ounces Compound liniment of camphor (camphorated oil) (Also known as camphorated oil; approximately 45ml)
- 0.5 ounces Tincture of opium (laudanum) (Approximately 15ml; this is a controlled substance and should not be prepared or used without proper medical authorization)
Instructions
- 1Measure 1.5 ounces (45ml) of compound liniment of camphor and 0.5 ounces (15ml) of tincture of opium into separate containers
- 2Pour both liquids into a clean glass bottle and mix together thoroughly by shaking or stirring
- 3Seal the bottle tightly and label clearly with contents and date. Store in a cool, dark place away from children and unauthorized users
- 4Historical usage: Apply to sprains and bruises only after all inflammation has disappeared. For rheumatic pains, rub onto affected area. For colic pain without inflammation, warm the liniment and rub over the abdomen. MODERN NOTE: Do not use this historical preparation.
